2021 Green Step School Awards

Green Steps Program Updates

The SC Green Step School Initiative by EEASC, SC DHEC and Sonoco Recycling flourished even during the pandemic:

  • 19 schools in 7 counties worked with 21 mentors on 115 projects
  • 3 new schools joined 6 schools continued to work toward certification
  • 7 schools earned recertification 3 certified schools "almost" pulled everything together for recertification despite COVID challenges

A huge thank you to all of our mentors representing:

  • Business: Sonoco Recycling
  • County Groups: Conservation Districts, Master Gardeners, Parks and Recycling Teams
  • Non Profits: Keep America Beautiful Affiliates, SC Wildlife Federation, TreesUpstate
  • State Groups: DHEC’s Bureau of Air Quality, DNR, Energy Office, Forestry Commission, SC Universities, and SC Sea Grant Consortium

A celebration shoutout to our Superlative Winners for 2021:

  • Conserve School of the Year: Taylors Elementary School (Greenville County)*
  • Protect School of the Year: Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences (Richland County)*
  • Restore School of the Year: Ocean Bay Middle School (Horry County)*
  • Overall School of the Year: White Knoll High School (Lexington County)
  • Mentor of the Year: Laura Blake Orr at Keep the Midlands Beautiful

*These schools made history this year, by earning the fourth of our four superlative awards. Over many years they have each been selected as our Conserve, Protect, Restore and Overall School of the Year.

What an inspiration they continue to be to us all!
