2016 South Carolina Outreach and Informal Educators Summit (SCOIES)

The 2016 SCOIES is a FREE, informal, no-strings-attached, grassroots gathering of outreach and informal educators serving K12 students in the Midlands of SC. The two main goals for the 2016 SCOIES include the following:
  • A keynote presentation on “The World of a 4th Grader”! Oak Pointe 4th grade classroom teacher Malisa Johnson and Dutch Fork Elementary science coach Amy Umberger will come help us understand many dimensions of 4th graders as a specific audience.
  • To build stronger connections with informal education/outreach colleagues serving midlands K12
2016 SCOIES: Wednesday, January 6th, 2016, at Riverbanks Zoo, 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, 29210.
RSVP: Advance sign-up is required. Please RSVP to education@riverbanks.org.
Food: Participants will need to provide their own coffee, snacks, and lunch. One option is to bring a brown bag lunch, though no refrigeration or microwave access is available. A second option is to eat at one of Riverbanks’ many eating establishments. Please let us know ahead of time if you plan to purchase a meal onsite so that we can inform the kitchen to be prepared for a larger group than normal; this can be done when you RSVP.
Parking: Parking will be located to the left of the main entrance at Ndoki Gateway. Carpooling is encouraged. Please contact Katie McCoy at education@riverbanks.org if you have questions, can provide open seats, or need a short ride.
SCOIES “Fair”: Please bring brochures, maps, business cards, and other materials to share! Space will be provided for participants to display information about their site.
Before You Come: To help organize some of the breakout groups, we invite participants to share any ideas for environmental science, history, or other topics for the afternoon forum. See schedule below for more details. Please get these to david_shelley@nps.gov before COB Monday, January 4th if possible.
